The Portrait
For over twelve years, I've been working in the
area of genre fusion--principally involving fiction and poetry. Biography
also holds a strong attraction. Typically my work involves simultaneity
and multiple foci. I'm currently intrigued by metaphoric implications for
creative writing coming from physics (unification theory), mathematics
(chaos theory) and computer technology (inherent features and graphical
interface). Space-time is a fruitful area in fiction for me now.
Most recently my work has centered on the World Wide Web. Using color and
visual art has been exhilarating. I'm happy to say, I feel my digital art
is still very literary. I am especially interested in Netscape
innovations, the HTML language and internet conventions and the computer
medium.
My guiding lights are Madame de Lafayette, Gertrude Stein, Charles
Baudelaire, Tennessee Williams, Henry Miller, Molière and Marguerite
Duras. An eclectic list. Much new formalism is coming from women; a few
of the highly innovative women writers I admire are Kathy Acker, Edwidge
Danticat and Leslie Scalapino. I especially like writers who are
experimental but manage to keep their humanity--their sexuality, weaknesses,
passions--intact.
