A. Wright

from Chattel

IV. L of the body

A girl sleeps;
her eyelids shudder like insect wings.
She dangles her leg from the bedside.

V. A word, like a window, will crack in this heat

"Yesterday" becomes letterhead
or the lack of fresh bread.
The response is forced;
the tide pulls, a dart is thrown.

VII. The slap of water

The slap of water against a dock
sounds vulnerable in the way that "thigh"
is feminine. The shy look to their hands.

X. A locket or

screen door snaps shut.
The sea rocks back on her heels.
Yesterday is crisp as a new bill
and easily lost.
